Match days can be exciting, but for some children they can also bring uncertainty and anxiety. A little preparation beforehand can make all the difference.
- Talk About It in Advance
In the days leading up to the event, remind your child where they’re going, what time it starts and what they can expect.
Predictability helps reduce anxiety.
- Keep Information Consistent
Use the same simple messages each time you discuss the event.
Avoid changing plans where possible and let your child know what the order of the day will look like.
- Reassure Them There Is No Pressure
Remind your child that they only need to try their best.
There is no expectation to be perfect, and it’s okay if they need a little extra time to settle.
- Let Them Know They Are in Control
One of the biggest reassurances you can give is:
“If you’re not enjoying it or you need a break, that’s absolutely okay.”
Knowing they have that choice often helps children feel confident enough to participate.
- Stick to Familiar Routines
Where possible, keep mealtimes, travel arrangements and pre-match routines familiar.
Small routines create a sense of security.
- Celebrate Effort
After the match, avoid focusing only on the result.
Celebrate bravery, teamwork, participation and trying something new.
For many children, simply stepping onto the pitch is a huge achievement.
At Neuro Diverse FC, we believe match days should be about creating positive experiences where every child feels supported, encouraged and proud of themselves—regardless of the score.
Thanks
